I believe anti-immigrant sentiments from USA, Europe and other domains spilled over into Canada concerns over runaway non-permanent resident (NPR) population growth especially international students were contributing to overheating housing markets.
By mid-2024, these worries turned to the contribution of NPRs – particularly international students to rising youth unemployment rates.
This report provides a very helpful balance/way forward stating that by increasing the representation of the NPR population, particularly international students, in the Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey (LFS) survey it could significantly improve the accuracy of the LFS’s estimates of nominal wage growth and unemployment rates.
It would also clarify whether NPRs are displacing existing residents and suppressing their wages.
