This approval rate applies only to files IRCC processed as urgent. It does not mean that 99.3% of everyone who requested urgent processing was approved. The figures do not establish the outcome of every request received.
⏳ WHY THIS MATTERS
As of October 9, 2026, the estimated regular processing time for a Canadian proof-of-citizenship application was 34 months, with approximately 130,700 applicants awaiting a decision.
IRCC may consider urgent processing in qualifying circumstances, including:
✔️ Employment or education requirements.
✔️ Serious illness or death in the family requiring travel.
✔️ Certain cases involving minor children or statelessness.
✔️ Specific situations involving hardship or access to essential benefits.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT: BILL C-3
Canada’s updated citizenship-by-descent rules may also create a pathway to citizenship for certain people previously affected by the first-generation limit. Your eligibility depends on your individual circumstances and the applicable rules.
